What is a Learning Style?
An individual's learning style is the way in which that person is programmed to learn most effectively. It is the way you receive, understand, remember, and are able to use new information.
Does one Learning Style apply to everyone?
Can I have only one Learning Style?
No, many people have the ability to learn in different ways and can fit into multiple categories. This means that you would benefit from experimenting with different learning strategies from each area in which you may fall.
When we talk about learning styles and ways to assess what learning styles you have, you may see a question like the one below:
SAMPLE
When a teacher is performing a lecture you:
a) Space off because you can't follow what they are saying; you wish that they would write something on the board so you could follow. (VISUAL)
b) Listen carefully, picturing images in your mind that connect to the words the teacher is saying in order to help you understand and remember the lecture. (AUDITORY)
c) Pick up on some words so that you know the topic of the teacher's lecture, but could use something visual like a textbook or notes on the board to follow along better. (VISUAL/AUDITORY)
d) I hate when teachers lecture, I would rather learn from readings, group projects, labs, or field trips. (TACTILE/KINESTHETIC)
Of course there is no right or wrong answer. Remember, you are trying to learn about yourself and you are unique and different from anyone else.
