SELF-ADVOCACY

There are two important acronyms to remember when learning/practicing self-advocacy:

I PLAN:

Inventory: strengths, areas that need improvement, goals, choices for learning or accommodations

Provide: your inventoried information
Listen and respond: when someone is making a statement, or someone is asking you a question
Ask questions: for needed information, clarify misunderstood information.
Ask: Who? What? Where? When? Why? Which? How?
Name your goals: what you want to do, when you want to complete it

SHARE behaviors:

Sit up straight
Have a pleasant tone of voice
Activate your thinking by telling yourself: pay attention, participate, compare ideas
Relax by having internal dialog telling yourself to stay clam
Engage in eye contact
