ImPACT Baseline Testing Dates:
Tuesday 8/25/09 at 2:30 in the MVRHS Library
Friday 8/28/09 at 2:30 in the MVRHS Library
Students must bring the parental consent form in order to take the baseline test.
Please note:
If you have already taken a baseline test you do not have to take it again.
We will be offering ImPACT Baseline testing for athletes participating in all sports.
It is best to take the test before practices begin.
The Impact test may be taken during a "free" period while in school or after school.
Please see the Athletic Trainer to schedule your baseline test.
MVRHS now offers the ImPACT Concussion Management Program for our student athletes. We are proud to have Dr. Neal McGrath, of Sports Concussion New England, in Brookline, MA, as our consultant for the ImPACT program.
ImPACT is a neuropsychological test which helps us measure recovery from concussion and create a safe return to participation. It also aids us in determining a need for temporary academic modifications while recovering from a concussion.
This program is available to all MVRHS athletes. If any athlete is not in a "contact" sport but would like to participate in this free program please notify the Athletic Trainer.
The consequences of returning to sports prior to complete recovery after a concussion can be devastating. I highly recommend that all athletes participate in this program.
Please see the Athletic Trainer, School Nurse or Athletic Director for information, consent forms or to schedule a baseline test.
Athletes, remember to get in shape before practice begins.
CONDITION, STRETCH and STRENGTHEN!
Don't expect hell week to get you in shape for your sport. Starting a sport without conditioning prior to the first practice will increase your chance of injury. Also, remember to get plenty of rest and eat a balanced diet. Please see the Athletic Trainer if you have any questions about the types of activities that will help you prepare for your sport.
INJURIES IN ATHLETICS
If you think you have sustained an injury during any practice or game, you must notify the Athletic Trainer or the School Nurse as soon as possible. Follow PRICE for acute injury management. Seek medical attention if needed.
P Protect the area from further injury.
R Rest! Do not walk it out, this usually makes things worse.
I ICE (not heat) for the first 72 hours after injury
C Compression - using an ACE wrap or compression bandage will help to keep inflammation in control
E Elevate the injured limb to help control inflammation
Insurance - MVRHS provides accident insurance for covered expenses for all enrolled students while at school, traveling to/from school, and at school-sponsored activities. In the event of injury to your child, please report the injury as soon as possible to the school nurse or athletic trainer. The school nurse or athletic trainer will provide you with the claim forms and information needed.

Ankle sprains
Muscle Strains
Concussions

Heat Related Illnesses
OVERUSE INJURIES
Overuse injuries are common in high school sports. Beginning a sport without conditioning, changes in training intensity and or duration, fatigue, changing sports, ill fitting equipment, muscle imbalance, and new/old shoes are things that can cause overuse injuries. Apophysitis (Injury to the Growth Plate), Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints), Stress Fractures, and Tendonitis are some common overuse injuries. It is important to see the athletic trainer as soon as you start feeling any pain. Do not run through it or walk it off as this will make the condition worse, which will increase healing time and time away from your sport.
PREVENTING INJURIES
Make sure you are prepared for your sport. Condition, stretch and strengthen before the first practice. Also, make sure you hydrate with water or a sports beverage, consume a good balanced diet and get plenty of rest.
Remember, injuries can hinder your performance and the success of the team. So lets do what we can to prevent them in the first place!
Anyone who has sustained a previous injury may require taping or an individual strengthening program to reduce the chance of further injury. See the athletic trainer before the first practice if you have had an injury during the summer or prior to beginning of winter or spring sports.
